I am an Assistant Professor examining global change microbiology. My lab moved from the University of Arizona’s Soil, Water and Environmental Sciences Dept. where I co-founded the UA Ecosystem Genomics Initiative. With Scott Saleska (UA), I co-lead the 13-lab DOE-funded IsoGenie (isotopes+genes) project.
Our IsoGenie project examines a natural permafrost thaw gradient in Stordalen Mire, Sweden. We bring together high-temporal-resolution isoflux monitoring, deep characterization of the SOM and microbiota, hypothesis-driven experiments, and several scales of modeling to improve understanding of the controls on C loss from these dynamically changing ecosystems, in a predictive framework.
