Child Labor Advocacy Through the Years
Year: Senior
Major: Communication, Minor: Business Application
Summary of Work: This essay looks at how photography has been used to fight against child labor, starting with Lewis Hine’s powerful images that helped change laws in the early 1900s. Today, photographers like Claudia Berger and Lisa Kristine use similar methods to show the harsh realities of child labor around the world. But with so much information online and fake news, it’s harder to get people to care the way they did in the past. Many Americans also unknowingly support child labor by buying cheap products from companies that use it. The essay shows that while photography still has the power to inspire change, it’s harder now to make people feel the same urgency.
