Generally, students are assigned to manage and care for the registered Holstein CREAM herd at the UNH Fairchild Dairy Research and Teaching Center, where they learn to collaborate with their classmates to complete daily chores, make financial decisions, and ensure the health of their cows. Working closely with a renowned dairy nutritionist, a large animal veterinarian, the Fairchild director, and a farm animal management expert, students can use this class to focus on any topic that interests them!

What are the Outcomes?

CREAM has seven learning objectives that every student should strive to achieve:

Learn to work comfortably with dairy cows

Integrate and apply the science you’ve learned to the management of a dairy herd

Work productively with classmates in a cooperative venture

Make appropriate decisions in production agriculture

Operate a small-scale dairy farm business

Develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills critical to success in any career path

Engage in your learning and be responsible for your behavior in a farm business

What are the Responsibilities?

As a CREAM student, you are expected to commit about 8-10 hours per week every semester. This time includes weekly business meetings on Tuesdays, committee work, chores, and other activities or assignments. While this seems daunting, good time management and effective teamwork will help this run smoothly!

What are the Committees?

Throughout the academic year, students will spend about 6-7 weeks on each committee:

Breeding (select sires for cows to improve their genetics and reproductive performance)

Finance (maintain financial records and present all of CREAM’s income and expenses)

Education and Planning (plan lectures, events, service activities, and schedule assignments)

Production Management (track the production, health, and reproductive issues of the CREAM herd)

Farm Facilities and Maintenance (ensure the CREAM facilities are kept clean)

Please refer to the “Committees” tab for more information about committees!

What are the Chores?

Students are expected to complete 3-4 weekly chore shifts, including weekends. There are four types of shifts students can complete: an early morning (4:15 AM), a mid-morning (5:30 AM), an early afternoon (3:15 PM), and a mid-afternoon (4:30 PM). During the early shifts, students are tasked with tying, feeding, or milking.

Early Shifts:

When tying, students unclip the cows, scrape all the dirty bedding and rebed, clean their water bowls, and then reclip them once they are all done milking. While feeding, students use a Jaylor to make the carefully curated diets created by fellow students and dairy nutritionists. Finally, the milker follows a “spray,” “strip/wipe,” and “attach” pattern to milk all the cows.

Mid Shifts:

During a morning mid-shift, students feed all the heifers in the heifer barn using the CREAM Jaylor. When assigned the calf room, students clean/scrape all the calf stalls, rebed them, distribute milk, feed them calf starter grain, and clean/refill their waters. Students even get the opportunity to bottle-feed new calves every time they are born during their shift! The last task is cleaning the super hutches where students scrape, rebed, and clean/refill all the water for the juveniles in the outdoor super hutches.

How Will I Be Graded?

CREAM is unlike any other class, mainly because of its grading style. Instead of having regularly scheduled assignments and exams, students are graded by their peers and barn staff to evaluate their proficiency at chores, participation in business meetings, involvement in their committees, attentiveness during Thursday education sessions, and overall initiative/teamwork. While this may seem daunting, it is incredibly beneficial to get feedback from peers to understand which aspects you can improve on and which you are doing exceedingly well in!

What is the “Magic” Word?

Like any other class, students get more out of CREAM when they put more in. Therefore, our magic word is “initiative.” Whether you show great initiative by covering other students’ shifts, making changes to the dairy barm, or leading your subcommittee, you will make a big difference in ensuring the cows’ happiness and making the class run smoothly!

CREAM by far will be one of your most memorable experiences at UNH!

Official UNH CREAM Website

What is CREAM?
