Dr. Chen had the pleasure of meeting with a group of excellent master’s students in the Department of Special Education at National Chia-Yi University at the beginning of May 2023. They gathered for an interactive and fun discussion about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and research in the field. The passion and enthusiasm these students showed for AAC and its impact on individuals with special needs were truly inspiring. An exciting exchange occurred at Taiwan’s National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences. Dr. Chen engaged with enthusiastic students from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology. She delivered a presentation titled ” Principles for Implementing AAC Services: A Quick Start Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists. “The session delved into practical strategies and principles to empower future Speech-Language Pathologists in enhancing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"NTUNHS_3_get\n\t\t\t\t\"NTUNHS_2_during\n\t

Her presentation, “Transforming Communication: Unlocking Potential through AI-Powered Language Sample Analysis and AAC Intervention,” demonstrated how AI can help clinicians and special education teachers to apply evidence-based practice for individuals with complex communication needs. The first research study for the TADS lab has officially begun! We are using eye-tracking\u00a0and motion-sensor technologies\u00a0to test individuals’ learning performance on high-technology AAC systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My name is Julia Nicolosi and I am a graduate student from the Communication Sciences and Disorders department at the University of New Hampshire. I am here to invite you to participate in my research study investigating the speech and accuracy of accessing high-technology augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices (IRB-FY2022-316).<\/strong><\/p>\n

You may be eligible if you:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.Are above 18 years old and can sign the consent form.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2.Can point using one or two fingers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

3.Have no self-reported history of premorbid communication, motor, or neurological disorders: You must be able to follow verbal instructions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.Do not wear glasses (contact lenses are ok).<\/strong><\/p>\n

5.Pass a screening of auditory comprehension, motor control, and vision.Individuals who cannot participate on assigned days and times will be excluded.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Individuals who fail the screening procedures will be excluded. Individuals who wear glasses instead of contact lenses will be excluded. Participants will wear an eye-tracking device that cannot be worn over eyeglasses.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Choosing to participate in this study will require 7 sessions ranging from 45 minutes to 2hours, ~10 hours total. The first session will require screening and baseline testing. The second through fifth sessions will require participants to practice a list of vocabulary on the AAC device using two different practice schedules: blocked and randomized. In the last two sessions of the study, participants will be tested on their memory of the vocabulary.<\/strong><\/p>\n
