So, we&#8217;ll make sure to create some informal lunch eating time!!\n<p>All interested in the permafrost microbiome are welcome!<\/p>\n\t<p><strong>Relationships Between Microbial Communities and Ecosystem Processes in High-Latitude Ecosystems: Interactions That Influence Soil, Sediment, and Aquatic Processes in a Changing Cryosphere<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AGU Oral, Poster, and Online poster discussions<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday 12 December 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>oral &#8211; 4:45-6:15 (local time) |\u00a0poster &#8211;\u00a009:00 &#8211; 12:30\u00a0(local time) |\u00a0online poster discussion &#8211;\u00a0\u00a013:45 &#8211; 14:45\u00a0\u00a0(local time)<\/p>\n<p>Microbial communities in soils, wetlands, rivers, and lakes of high latitude ecosystems are an understudied yet important component of local to global biogeochemical cycles. The cryosphere is rapidly changing, resulting in unprecedented transitions in ecosystem state and function. Because high latitude ecosystems are critical to the global carbon cycle, changing biogeochemical dynamics related to permafrost thaw, wildfire, shrubification, lake drainage, glacier retreat and other processes can have large feedbacks to climate warming. In particular, winter and shoulder season processes are an important and understudied aspect of high latitude ecosystems. The relationships between microbial and ecosystem pattern and processes that underpin large scale ecosystem change are poorly constrained, due to lack of basic ecological principles that guide understanding and lack of methodologies to study complex microbial phenomena at multiple spatial, temporal, and ecological scales. This session aims to bring together microbial ecologists and biogeochemists to synthesize our knowledge of microbial community influence on cryosphere processes under global change.<\/p>\n\t<p><strong>Taking a Look at the Overlooked: Microorganisms and their Processes in Permafrost [Session 3]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intact permafrost harbors a diverse group of both active and dormant microorganisms. As permafrost thaws, these microbial populations face dramatic changes in both their physical and chemical environments. Unknowns remain regarding many microbial-mediated processes that have the potential to alter feedbacks between permafrost regions and the global climate system, from the rate and fate of transformation of the large stock of permafrost organic matter to changes in aboveground vegetation.
