The Preschool Development Grant, Birth through Five,<\/strong>\u00a0continues New Hampshire’s efforts\u00a0to better understand the current early childhood system (see graphic below) and use those data to\u00a0strengthen the system, better address the needs of vulnerable young children and their families, and help build a solid foundation to improve outcomes for NH’s children, families, schools, and communities. The grant is a\u00a0collaboration between UNH, the NH Departments of\u00a0Education<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Health and Human Services<\/a>, the\u00a0Governor’s early childhood council\u00a0(NH Council for Thriving Children)<\/a>, and New Hampshire’s early childhood advocates and\u00a0practitioners (see our\u00a0partners<\/a>).<\/p>\n\t

Each state provides services to young children and support to families in a unique way. New Hampshire utilizes a “mixed delivery” system, meaning that programs targeting children from birth through age 5 (B-5) are provided by public entities (e.g., Head Start or federally-funded home visiting programs) as well as private groups (e.g., child care centers or home-based child care providers). While this approach allows for local specialization of programs, the range of provider types and services results in inequal access and varied quality. The PDG will allow NH to create a comprehensive, effective, and efficient statewide early childhood system.<\/p>\n

The PDG B-5 project is broader than preschool. To best support young children and their families, the PDG B-5 will support early\u00a0care and education, health, and family support initiatives broadly. The grant seeks to support New Hampshire’s vision that all families are afforded comprehensive and responsive supports, so they are healthy, learning, and thriving, now and in the future. The three-year (2020-2022), $26.8 million grant, will help to\u00a0build New Hampshire build an\u00a0effective<\/em>,\u00a0inclusive<\/em>,\u00a0responsive<\/em>,\u00a0efficient<\/em>, and\u00a0evidence-informed<\/em> early childhood system.
