\nAn important conclusion from several recent events in Finland and the USA was the need for a holistic, integrative assessment of plausible futures of the Arctic, cutting across different disciplines and individual countries’ strategic interests. As an international, independent, non-governmental institute, IIASA is in the process of initiating an Arctic Futures Initiative as a IIASA Futures Initiative, integrating academia, policy, business and society for a holistic understanding of the Arctic.\n

\nThe Arctic Futures Institute (AFI) is a joint initiative between three Maine-based\u00a0partners<\/a>: the Center for Oceans & Coastal Law of the University of Maine School of Law, the Climate Change Institute of the University of Maine, and the World Ocean Observatory. The three founding AFI institutions are a unique combination of science, law, policy and outreach based in Maine.\n

\nScientific research in the Arctic necessitates good communication and cooperation with northern communities. The following list is a compilation of resources, recommendations, and “best practices” from a variety of organizations. This webpage is intended to be a living resource and will be updated as new information becomes available. Each community has a unique set of requests for researcher conduct and level of desired inclusivity. As such, direct communication and relationships with community leaders should be the highest priority.\n
