About<\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<article id=\"node-2887\" role=\"article\">\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Arctic is a bellwether of climate change, with surface temperatures rising twice as fast as the global average. September sea ice extent in the Arctic has decreased by 40% since the 1970s; a Northwest Passage has opened; and a nearly ice-free Arctic will likely occur by mid-century. This\u00a0rapid amplification of warming in the Arctic has powerful and enduring global impacts, including prospects for mineral and energy exploration, expanded fisheries, faster shipping routes, and an increase in tourism. However, these opportunities bring with them potential hazards.<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic also holds unique natural archives of Earth&#8217;s climate history. Sediment cores from oceans and lakes along with ice cores from glaciers and the Greenland ice sheet reveal historical information about sea ice cover and the physical state and composition of past atmospheres. Melting ice is uncovering surprising artifacts from past societies, exposing a wealth of new information for historians and anthropologists. Finally, polar regions provide a unique window into the space environment, as terrestrial magnetic field lines guide ionized particles from the magnetosphere, Sun, and galaxy into the atmosphere over the polar cap.<\/p>\n<p>Questions surround the sovereignty of Arctic waters as well as the shared governance necessary to regulate mineral and energy exploration, transportation (both shipping and overflight), fishing, pollution, environmental conservation, and security interests. Scientific knowledge of the changing Arctic is key to successful diplomacy and international policy.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The 4 million residents of the Arctic (including 400,000 indigenous people) must respond to a changing climate as well as an influx of visitors, technologies, and cultures from the lower latitudes. This increased access to Arctic regions requires emergency response mechanisms for disasters such as oil spills, shipwrecks, and search and rescue efforts. Thawing permafrost, combined with melting sea and land ice, leads to coastal erosion, damage to fragile ecosystems and societal infrastructure, an increase in wildfires, and the release of large stores of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere (a &#8220;carbon bomb&#8221;). Ocean acidification, chemical pollution, and noise pollution stress marine ecosystems, while shifting migration patterns on both land and sea threaten biodiversity and species extinction. The summer sea-ice is in rapid decline, the winter sea-ice is also diminishing, the surrounding permafrost is thawing, methane is being released to the atmosphere, and Greenland is melting over much of its surface and shedding ice to the sea at an accelerating pace. \u00a0By mid-century we may see an ice-free Arctic Ocean in the summertime for the first time in human history. Such dramatic changes will spur geological and biological resource exploitation, territorial disputes, maritime transportation, tourism, and military activity.\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Henry Pollack, Ph. D.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<strong>Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus<\/strong>\n<strong>Department of Earth &amp; Environmental Sciences<\/strong>\n<strong>The University of Michigan<\/strong>\n<em>&#8220;Nature&#8217;s best thermometer, perhaps its most sensitive and unambiguous indicator of climate change, is ice. When ice gets sufficiently warm, it melts. \u00a0Ice asks no questions, presents no arguments, reads no newspapers, listens to no debates. It is not burdened by ideology and carries no political baggage as it crosses the threshold from solid to liquid. \u00a0It just melts.&#8221;<\/em>\n<em>&#8212; \u00a0<a title=\"A World Without Ice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwithoutice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A World Without Ice\u00a0<\/a><\/em>\n<p>Henry Pollack is a\u00a0geophysicist at the University of Michigan engaged in research on many aspects of Earth&#8217;s changing climate, most recently the dramatic effects of melting polar ice. His early research advanced knowledge of heat flow within Earth&#8217;s interior and at its surface. Using boreholes in the continental crust to reconstruct ground surface temperatures over the past 500 years, Pollack and his colleagues were able to provide historical context to the dramatic increase in surface temperatures since pre-industrial times. Pollack&#8217;s research has brought him to the forefront of climate change science, serving on advisory panels for the National Science Foundation, testifying before National Academy of Science and U.S. Senate committees, and providing briefings about climate change to Congress and the White House. He was a Contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice-President Al Gore and currently serves as a science advisor to Al Gore&#8217;s Climate Reality Project.<\/p>\n<p>Pollack has worked on seven continents, published widely, and earned a reputation as an excellent writer and public speaker who explains complex scientific ideas simply and clearly to general audiences. He routinely travels to both the Arctic and Antarctica as a guide and naturalist, helping eco-tourists gain first-hand understanding of Earth&#8217;s changing climate. These voyages include the pioneering cruises through the Northwest Passage by The World in 2012 and Crystal Serenity in 2016. Both in situ production and advection of upstream phytodetritus to these regions support persistent biological hotspots that connect benthic prey to diving marine mammals and seabirds, such as gray whales, walruses, and spectacled eiders. Times-series data over the last 30 years indicate that these regions have experienced a northward shift in macrofaunal composition and a decline in core benthic biomass that matches patterns of reduced sea ice, warming seawater, and changing sediment grain size that relates to varying current patterns. This presentation will discuss these data in the context of both process studies from the region and results from the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO), an international network of time series transects that is providing a framework to evaluate status and trends on a latitudinal bases in the Pacific Arctic region.\n<h4>Biography<\/h4>\n<p>Dr. Jacqueline Grebmeier is a Research Professor and a biological oceanographer at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (Chesapeake Biological Laboratory). Her extensive field research is advancing the understanding of how Arctic marine ecosystems respond to environmental change, and her leadership and service enhance the role of scientific observation and research in national and international Arctic policy.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Grebmeier&#8217;s research focuses on biological productivity in Arctic waters and sediments as well as long-term trends in ecosystem health of Arctic continental shelves, including the importance of bottom dwelling (benthic) organisms to higher levels of the Arctic food web, such as walrus, gray whale, and diving sea ducks. Past research also includes the study of radionuclide distributions in sediments and within the Arctic water column and the transport and fate of materials in melted snow in Arctic tundra. She was the overall project lead scientist for the U.S. Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions project and participated in the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pmel.noaa.gov\/rusalca\/\">Russian-American Census of the Arctic (RUSALCA)<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/arcticstudies.org\/comidacab\/\">Chukchi Sea Offshore Monitoring in Drilling Area (COMIDA) program<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nprb.org\/bering-sea-project\/about-the-project\/\">Bering Sea Project<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pmel.noaa.gov\/dbo\/\">Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO)<\/a>\u00a0in the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Grebmeier has served on numerous national and international advisory committees and research boards, including as a U.S. delegate to and a vice-president of the International Arctic Science Committee, a member of the U.S. Polar Research Board, and a Commissioner of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission. She has been on advisory and review committees to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Polar Research Board, National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Fish and Wildlife Service as well as on the steering committee for U.S. efforts during the International Polar Year. Conducting field research throughout Siberia, Alaska, and the Canadian Arctic, he has contributed toward understanding how a changing climate will impact Arctic rivers, watersheds, and permafrost. He has also\u00a0advanced interdisciplinary, system-level Arctic research,\u00a0serving\u00a0as Director of the Arctic System Science Program at the National Science Foundation.\nDr. Holmes initiated and led the\u00a0Arctic Great Rivers Observatory project, studying the Arctic&#8217;s six largest rivers (Ob&#8217;, Yenisey, Lena, and Kolyma in Siberia; Yukon and Mackenzie in North America). D.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<strong>Executive Director<\/strong>\n<strong>U.S. Arctic Research Commission<\/strong>\nDr. John Farrell is the Executive Director of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC), an independent federal agency of Presidential appointees that advises the White House and Congress on Arctic research matters. The USARC works with executive branch agencies to establish and execute a national Arctic research plan (see the most recent IARPC Arctic Research Plan FY2017-2021). The commission facilitates cooperation with local and state governments, including interacting with Arctic residents to assess research needs, and recommends means for developing international scientific cooperation in the Arctic.\nDr. Farrell previously served as Associate Dean of Research and Administration at the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. Before that, he was program director at the Joint Oceanographic Institutions, where he managed the international Ocean Drilling Program and the National Science Foundation&#8217;s U.S. Science Support Program. He played a pivotal role in planning and implementing the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iodp.org\/\">IODP<\/a>), the successor to the Ocean Drilling Program, and helped organize and conduct\u00a0the highly successful IODP Arctic Coring Expedition (<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/iodp.pangaea.de\/front_content.php?idcat=115\">ACEX<\/a>). Her observations of sea ice from Alaska to Greenland have played a crucial role in identifying the rapid changes occurring across the Arctic. As a leader in polar research, she was appointed in 2016 by President Barack Obama to be a member of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Richter-Menge has\u00a0led or participated in more than 20 field programs measuring\u00a0ice thickness and snow depth throughout the Arctic, providing\u00a0valuable insight into the behavior of sea ice cover needed to improve\u00a0the safety and efficiency of energy exploration and the operation of surface vessels and submarines that travel in ice-covered waters. These ground-based measurements also support the development of airborne and satellite-based observations\u00a0aimed at understanding the role of polar regions in the global climate system. Recently, she has overseen the design and deployment of autonomous sea ice mass balance buoys as part of the Arctic Observing Network in order to document and understand the rapid change in the thickness and extent of the sea ice cover.<\/p>\n<p>Richter-Menge also chairs the Science Steering Committee for the Submarine Arctic Science (SCICEX) Program and has been sea ice science team lead for NASA&#8217;s IceBridge mission. She is currently lead editor for the NOAA Arctic Report Card, summarizing the most recent observations collected by the international community on air, ocean, land and ecosystem changes in the Arctic. \u00a0She has served as an affiliate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a visiting research scientist at Dartmouth College, and a professional engineer for the State of New Hampshire. She has been awarded the Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service twice as well as an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
