Katharine A. Duderstadt<\/strong> is an Research Associate Professor in the Earth Systems Research Center and Affiliate Associate Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of New Hampshire. Her research focuses on atmospheric chemical transport modeling, ranging from the troposphere to the upper atmosphere on both regional and global scales. Recent projects involve the effects of energetic particles from the Sun, radiation belts, and galaxy on the composition and chemistry of the upper atmosphere, including searching for signatures of past solar activity and solar events in polar ice cores.<\/p>\n

She also helps promote interdisciplinary research initiatives that involve air pollution and climate change. She serves as Project Coordinator of the Convergence Arctic Research Perspectives Graduate Research Traineeship (CARPE NRT<\/a><\/strong>). She organizes and leads the UNH Arctic Network,<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was founding lead of the New England Arctic Network<\/a><\/strong> (NEAN…now rebranding to “42N”), is a UNH representative for ARCUS<\/a><\/strong> and UArctic, <\/a><\/strong>and serves as co-I on the project Arctic, Climate, and Earthquakes (ACE)<\/a><\/strong>. She co-led a NSF Coastlines and People Project<\/a><\/strong> focused on Northern New England; participated in the UNH CoRE TIGERS <\/strong><\/a>initiative to use geospatial tools to study political conflict and air pollution in the Middle East; was member of a UNH MIST INEA<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0team exploring\u00a0possibilities for engaged research partnerships with Indigenous communities in New England and the Arctic; and co-organized\u00a0the\u00a02020-2021 Sidore Series<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0“Honoring the Mother of All People: Contemporary Indigenous Leadership in Revitalizing Environmental and Cultural Sustainability.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Duderstadt currently serves a volunteer Community Scientist for AGU’s Thriving Earth Exchange<\/a><\/strong> working with Cherokee Concerned Citizens<\/strong><\/a> to better quantify and understand the industrial air pollution affecting the Cherokee Forest neighborhood of Pascagoula, MS.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0teaches\u00a0Global Atmospheric Chemistry<\/strong>\u00a0(Earth Sciences) and co-teaches\u00a0Searching for Our Place in the Universe: The Foundation and Limits of Certainty in Physical Science\u00a0<\/strong>(Physics) at UNH. Having spent 6 years in the high school classroom teaching Physics and English (including serving as a US Peace Corps Volunteer), she maintains a strong commitment to training the next generation of environmental scientists and global leaders.<\/p>\nResearch Scientist
