For juniors in Environmental Science – a seminar on planning and organizaing the capstone experience required for the major.\u00a0 Topics include how to find the perfect (or best) internship, research or capstone experience, writing of CVs and letters of introduction, planning personal contacts, producing a contract for each student.<\/p>\n

NR502 – Forest Ecosystems and Environmental Change<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n
\n

Semester: Fall
\nOffered: 2017<\/h3>\n<\/section>\n

Forest ecosystems cover a large fraction of the Earth’s land surface and are the most diverse and productive of natural biomes. This course introduces students to these complex systems and explores both the natural processes that regulate them and the environmental factors that cause change over time.\u00a0 The goal of the class is increased understanding of where forests grow, how they work, what they provide us in products and services, aesthetics and recreation, and how they are affected by a changing global environment.\u00a0 Content is organized around 5 general topics.<\/p>\n

  • Weeks 1-3 – Forests – What are they, where do they grow, and how have they changed?<\/li>\n
  • Weeks 4-7 – Forest Ecosystem Function – What forests do (and do for us)<\/li>\n
  • Weeks 8-10 – Forests in a Changing World: Physical Climate<\/li>\n
  • Weeks 11-12 – Forests in a Changing World: Chemical Climate<\/li>\n
  • Weeks 13-14 – Forests in a Changing World: Land Use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    NR403 – Introduction to Environmental Science<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n

    Semester: Fall
    \nOffered: 2017<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n

    A multi-disciplinary introduction to Environmental Science, presenting basic concepts and controversies in geology, meteorology\/hydrology, global biology and biogeochemistry, integrated through the study of the Earth as a system.\u00a0 The course is divided into four sections addressing each of these four areas.\u00a0 Energy will be used as a cross-cutting theme throughout the course.\u00a0 Potential sources of energy from each of these components of the Earth system will be explored.\u00a0 There will be a 1.5-hour lab period each week that will provide experience in data analysis and synthesis relative to that week’s topic and\/or time to work on term projects.<\/p>\n

    NR400 – Professional Perspectives in Environmental Science<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n

    Semester: Fall
    \nOffered: 2017<\/h3>\n<\/section>\n

    The purpose of this one credit course is to introduce students entering the Environmental Sciences to faculty, topics, methods and questions at the forefront of current areas of research and engagement.\u00a0 There will be one 1-hour presentation per week, with a different faculty members invited for each class.<\/p>\n

    NR730 – Terrestrial Ecosystems<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n

    Semester: N\/A<\/h3>\n<\/section>\n

    The course is presented in four sections.\u00a0 The first introduces the basics of ecosystem studies, addressing fundamental principles and the challenges inherent in measuring the integrated function of large units of the landscape, and running experiments at this scale.\u00a0 In the second section we drop down a level to examine the major processes (photosynthesis, decomposition, weathering) that control ecosystem response to environmental conditions.\u00a0 In the third section we re-emerge at the ecosystem level to discuss how these processes interact at the whole-…<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
