{"id":23,"date":"2023-05-02T14:48:38","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T18:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.usnh.edu\/healthy-families\/?page_id=23"},"modified":"2024-01-12T11:10:31","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T16:10:31","slug":"community-engagement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.usnh.edu\/healthy-families\/community-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p>The Healthy Families Research Program is committed to collaborating with community stakeholders in family health including parents, special education and related service providers,\u00a0and\u00a0pediatric healthcare providers such as occupational therapists and pediatricians.\u00a0 Dr. Smith\u00a0is available to meet with\u00a0community members to engage in\u00a0topics of interest or need from you.\u00a0 She is also available to provide formal or informal consultations, presentations, or workshops tailored to your unique needs.\u00a0 She presents regularly on topics related to family health and pediatric occupational therapy service provision.\u00a0 Some of Dr. Smith&#8217;s community engagements, presentations, and workshops\u00a0include the following:<\/p>\n<strong>COMMUNITY PARTNERS<br \/>\n<\/strong><em><a title=\"Twenty-One Senses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.twentyonesenses.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twenty-One Senses<\/a> <\/em>is a nonprofit organization that supports parents and caregivers of chidren with sensory processing needs through awareness building, parent-coaching, and extensive resource provision.\u00a0 Twenty-One Senses and the Healthy Families Research Program share a common purpose in supporting families to be able to engage in the everyday life activities that they want to do as a family. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, AK.\u00a0 Presented to pediatricians on applications of the GMFCS to medical decision making and therapy referral processes.<\/p>\n<strong>SCHOOL DISTRICTS<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Supporting self-regulation in elementary school students<\/em>.\u00a0 2013, Invited presenter.\u00a0 Anchorage School District. Eagle River, AK.\u00a0 Presented to general education and special education teachers on practical ways to\u00a0embed\u00a0self regulation strategies in the classroom and school environments for all children.\n<p><em>Applying the ICF to school-based occupational therapy practice for students with eating and feeding dysfunction<\/em>. Invited 2015 trainer.\u00a0 Anchorage School District.\u00a0 Anchorage, AK.\u00a0 Provided workshop for school-based occupational therapists on practical ways to evaluate and provide eating and feeding interventions to maximize student&#8217;s participation in snack and mealtimes at school.<\/p>\n<p><em>Eating and feeding dysfunction in infants and children on the autism spectrum<\/em>.\u00a0 2003, Invited presenter. Anchorage, AK.\u00a0 Presented to school-based occupational and physical therapists on eating and feeding for children with autism.\u00a0 Provided specific evaluation and intervention strategies for application to improve children&#8217;s mealtime outcomes.<\/p>\n<p><em>Developmentally appropriate hand skills<\/em>. 2003, Invited presenter.\u00a0 Anchorage School District.\u00a0 Eagle River, AK.\u00a0 Presented to early childhood special education teachers on development of hand skills in preschool aged children.\u00a0 Provided specific strategies to support development of skills within the natural environment of the early childhood classroom.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fine motor skill development in the typical child<\/em>.\u00a0 2001, Invited trainer. \u00a0Headstart Foundation.
