By comparing food production, dietary choices, rates of obesity and eating disorders, we may have found a link through food as to why the French have a longer lifespan than Americans.<\/b>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usnh.edu\/frenchculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/2023\/10\/health-wellness.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.usnh.edu\/frenchculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/2023\/10\/health-wellness.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a>\n<u><b>Overall Health:<\/b><\/u>\n<ul>\n<li><b>One of the most shocking statistics was\u00a0<\/b><b>that France&#8217;<\/b><b>s life expecta<\/b><b>ncy (<\/b><b>M=77, F=82),\u00a0 was 2-3 years more than the United States (M=79,F=85).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Also France&#8217;s obesity rate(17%) is half of the United states(34%)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<u><b>Eating Disorders:<\/b><\/u>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Unfortunately both the United States and France&#8217;s population are ravaged by the eating disorders. America does not have a standout program that focus on this kind of illness, other than just regular treatment.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>France has been proactive in trying to get eating disorders under control. They have implemented new legislation that does not allow unhealthy models to be hired or participate in the field of work.They must have a doctor&#8217;s note that states they are healthy. Also another rule is that any photo containing photoshop must have a label stating that it is photoshopped so that there is not a fals<\/b><b>e image for people to compare themselves too.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<u><b>Obesity:<\/b><\/u>\n<ul>\n<li><b>America has been the leading country in the world regarding obesity. With our poor dietary choices and frequent visits to fast food chains, this statistic is not shocking.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Obesity rate: F=36.6, M=33.9<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usnh.edu\/frenchculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/2023\/10\/screen_shot_2018-12-11_at_5.39.43_pm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.usnh.edu\/frenchculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/2023\/10\/screen_shot_2018-12-11_at_5.39.43_pm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<b>Over the years France has been increasing their obesity rate. This is thanks to &#8220;Americanism&#8221;. A movement in France where American influence has taken over French culture. For example, McDonalds has become a popular option in France. A decade ago these kind of food choices in France would have never been allowed. 2020 is the year dieticians believe France will ultimately catch up to the United States&#8217; obesity rate.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Obesity rate: F=14.6 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0M=14.5<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><b>Dietary Choices (U.S.)<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<b>The American Diet:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The typical American diet does not align with the official U.S Dietary guidelines. Over \u00be have a diet low in fruits, veggies, oils and dairy. More than \u00bd meet\/ exceed grain and protein recommendations.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>The Official 2015-2020 dietary guidelines recommend following more of a mediterranean diet, which contains more fruits and seafood, with less dairy and meats<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<b>American School Lunches:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<b>Pictured are several &#8220;typical&#8221; American school lunches that have little to no actual health benefits or fresh foods, and serve more of the purpose of mass producing food for the public schools.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Americans do not get long lunch breaks for work or school, causing easier accessibility to more fast food places for time purposes, also causing them to generally have to eat much faster:<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>&#8220;A second insight on the American side is that junk food may be an effective antidote for stress. Americans tend to be either overscheduled and overworked or under scheduled and out of work. The HALT emotions (Hurried, Agitated, Lonely, Tired) trigger greater interest in potato chips than in an apple&#8221;.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b>Veganism and Vegetarianism in the U.S:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>18 percent of Americans 17 and older have at one time in their lives \u00a0considered themselves vegetarian or vegan<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><b>Dietary Choices (France)<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<b>Typical French Eating Habits:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<b>Fresh food that locally grown, long lunch periods that allow for leisure and digestion time, a taboo about snacking, and there is no specific set of guidelines for adults.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Meals to-go are uncommon in the French lifestyle and it&#8217;s encourage to take your time to eat.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b><a href=\"http:\/\/thecircular.org\/where-to-find-the-best-french-food-in-dublin\/\">http:\/\/thecircular.org\/where-to-find-the-best-french-food-in-dublin\/<\/a><\/b>\n<p><b>French School Lunches:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<b>This is where the French learn what the proper way to eat. Children are forced to eat like adults, no kids menus are available at restaurants.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>At French schools, they don&#8217;t allow for vending machines on school grounds.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b><a href=\"https:\/\/karenlebillon.com\/french-school-lunch-menus\/\">https:\/\/karenlebillon.com\/french-school-lunch-menus\/<\/a><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<b>The schools want to only promote healthy food choices for children.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b>The French Stairs:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<b>Much like the United States, the French have a visual that represents the targeted amount of each food group one should get.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>The items at the bottom of the stairs represent the food which should be consumed the least foods, while the items at the top should be consumed the most.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>The actual stairs represent exercise which must be done in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailymeal.com\/travel\/food-pyramids-around-world-slideshow\/slide-\">https:\/\/www.thedailymeal.com\/travel\/food-pyramids-around-world-slideshow&#8230;<\/a><\/b>\n<b>Vegans and Vegetarians in France:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<b>Is an uncommon choice among French people, only about 2% of the French population and about 7% of the population is vegetarian.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>This rate can be contributed to the way the food is produced in France.<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<u><b>Food Production (U.S.)<\/b><\/u>\n<ul>\n<li><b>In the U.S., the vast majority of cattle (soon to be used for meat) spend only their first months of life on a farm transferred, sometimes thousands of miles away, to giant feedlots where they are packed in by the tens of thousands, and fed corn and hormones. Once they cows wear a patch behind their ear, which releases a synthetic growth hormones\u2028. \u00a0This poor treatment of animals can lead to other health problems within the cattle. In turn the US people then consume these sick cows.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/24\/dining\/24beef.html\">https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/24\/dining\/24beef.html<\/a><\/b>\n<p><b><u>Food Production in France:<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>France leads on food sustainability, meaning that the country conserves natural resources while having minimal impact on the environment when producing food. As most people in the world are aware of, there is a significant waste problem across the globe. France is the first nation in the world to penalize supermarkets and shops for throwing away food. The law was made in 2016 to cut down the amount of food that gets wasted on a daily basis that could be donated to food pantries and soup kitchens. The law can cost thousands of dollars for the shops that decide not to follow the law, with each infraction costing up to $4,500.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b><a href=\"https:\/\/thesra.org\/french-lessons-required-global-sustainability-class\/\">https:\/\/thesra.org\/french-lessons-required-global-sustainability-class\/<\/a><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>France has the largest agricultural area in Europe with 30 million hectares dedicated to farmland, which is equivalent to 74 million acres. With such a great portion dedicated to farming and agriculture, it employs 3.5% of the population, equal to about 2.34 million people.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<b><a href=\"http:\/\/agriculture.gouv.fr\/overview-french-agricultural-diversity\">http:\/\/agriculture.gouv.fr\/overview-french-agricultural-diversity<\/a><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The farmland includes about 490,000 farms in the country of France along with 24,800 farms in oversea territories. Each region of France has its own goods, for example field crops can be found all over France. Dairy can be found in the west, vineyards can be found almost everywhere, and meat and livestock are in central France. \u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/agriculture.gouv.fr\/overview-french-agricultural-diversity\">http:\/\/agriculture.gouv.fr\/overview-french-agricultural-diversity<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><u><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n<b>After finishing our research, we have come to the conclusion that the United States should incorporate French traditions regarding food, to live a healthier, longer life.<\/b>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction: Our initial research question was focused on understanding how the French are living longer than Americans through food.
