“The Existence of Empathy in Photographs” by Dina Rathke

The Existence of Empathy in Photographs

Year: Senior

Major: Communication, Minor: Sport Management and Leadership

Summary of Work: Photographs can provide more for an audience than just an image. Each image we encounter every day has the power to change our hearts and minds, offer a new perspective, or showcase a subject that may have been overlooked by audiences in the past. This analysis aims to understand how photographers utilize rhetorical and photographic devices to draw out emotion from their audience. Specifically, evaluate photographs that can elicit empathy from their audience. The photo essay This Is Cancer In The End documents a man’s last days dying from cancer. The effects of cancer on your body, your mobility, your life, and your loved ones are on display in the photo essay.
