\n\t\t\tAbout the CAT Lab\t<\/h2>\n\t

The\u00a0Communication, Acquisition, and Translational Studies Laboratory (CAT Lab)\u00a0studies how infants and young children learn how to speak and understand language, looking at how\u00a0babies begin to produce their first words and\u00a0sentences and\u00a0how they learn new words. Many of our studies look at the role of\u00a0the melody and rhythm of speech (called\u00a0prosody)\u00a0at different stages in development, and how these early language processes impact successful communication.<\/p>\n

Critically, our research also explores how language acquisition processes may vary in children with autism spectrum disorders and children with motor speech disorders like childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This work aids in\u00a0earlier diagnosis and improved assessment and intervention.<\/p>\n
