Thailand is a country with a rich cultural heritage, amazing landscapes, and deeply rooted traditions. Buddhism is deeply rooted in everyday life there. Buddhism, which is the most common religion in the country, influences Thai culture in the way of beliefs, artwork, and traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Origins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Around the fifth century BCE, Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha, brought his teachings of Buddhism\u00a0to India,. His ideas spread throughout Asia and became integrated into local traditions. The Indian Emperor Ashoka sent missionaries to Southeast Asia in the third century BCE, which is when Buddhism first arrived in Thailand. Also, Buddhism’s place in Thai society became established when it was made the official religion during the Sukhothai Kingdom in the thirteenth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theravada Buddhism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Theravada Buddhism, also known as the “School of the Elders,” puts a\u00a0emphasis on the Buddha’s original teachings. This particular type of Buddhism is a way of life, not just a religion, in Thailand. The Eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truths are two of the main principles that lead practitioners to enlightenment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thousands of beautiful temples, or “wats,” can be found throughout Thailand. These\u00a0structures are a proof of Thailands\u00a0rich Buddhist past. Famous examples include Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew, which is home to the Emerald Buddha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
