Based on archeological findings, it is likely that people lived in the area up to 40,000 years ago. One of the most important discoveries is the Ban Chiang archaeological site in northeastern Thailand, which shows advanced tools and pottery, showing a highly developed agriculture society.

Dvaravati (6th-11th Century)
During this time, Buddhism was introduced and Indian influence started spreading. Hindu as well as Buddhist sculptures and towns were the main characteristics of the Dvaravati Kingdom. Sites like Uthong and Nakhon Pathom are notable.

The Khmer Empire (9th-15th centuries)
Thailand today was influenced by the Khmer Empire, particularly in the northeast. During this time, temples featuring Hindu-Buddhist themes and Khmer architectural styles were built, like those at Phanom Rung.

Sukhothai (1238–1438 AD)
The Sukhothai Kingdom formed during this period, which is often regarded as the start of Thai civilization. It is known for its distinct artistic style, for having helped spread Theravada Buddhism, and for King Ramkhamhaeng’s invention of the Thai script.
