Research Biography
Dr. Gu was a post-doctoral researcher in the BASAL Lab from 2018-2020. He obtained his Ph.D. in Geographical information science in 2015 at Beijing Normal University and B.S. in Geographical information science in 2009 at the University of Lanzhou. Dr. Gu's work at the University of New Hampshire included collecting, compiling, and processing forest data from multiple sources such as UAS (unmanned aerial system) images, historical records, and field data. He has also developed a geospatial workflow to find the best scale for single tree detection and delineation. He worked to conduct modeling between ground and UAS measurements based on the Bayesian statistics and develop improved region growing and graph network algorithms to segment single tree crown from UAS data, which resulted in 11.1% and 23.5% increases in accuracy, respectively. Dr. Gu has also taught advanced remote sensing class as co-instructor and created ArcGIS-python tutorials.
Prior to his work at the University of New Hampshire, Dr. Gu has worked at the University of Changzhou as an Associate Professor, at Starmap Technology Co., as a Senior consultant, and at the University of Heilongjiang as an Associate Professor. Currently, Dr. Gu is employed as a Geospatial Analyst at the National Renewable Energy Lab.
